Announcements

The number of knitting podcasts continues to grow - Here are three new ones to try.

Belle of the Ball

Diva knitting

Knit Obsession with zknits.

The Annecdote

My stash of yarn is pretty small but my stash of love overflows - this is a tale of how Valentine’s day was celebrated at my place.

At the moment my favourite stash yarn is Madil Kid seta in a beautiful cornflower blue.

The Thrifty Crafter

Someone left a comment on an earlier episode with a link to Amazon sale pages. I decided to link to some online yarn store sale pages:

The knittery

OZEyarns

Yarns online

The wool Shack

Wool Baa

The Knitting loft

Also…I though I’d just mention The Wool Inn at Penrith, NSW. It has a pay as you knit system going where they hold yarn for 2 months so you can buy it a bit a t a time - good for all us thrifty knitters…not that I live close enough to make use of it - what a shame.

THE PAY IT FORWARD SWAP - I have joined this swap but no-one has joined me. If you think you might be interested check out my personal blog for the guidelines.

Starbuckles - the Cafe` Chronicles

Yay! It’s a new Segment! I hope you enjoy it.

I hang out at Starbucks a fair bit because they leave me alone while I’m knitting or embroidering. I’m going to collect some stories as I sit there…and bring them to you.

In this episode you’ll hear the first installment about my encounter with a very young and novice stitcher…and her Mum.

Visits to the Yarn store - Ellen’s Visit

I’ve recently attended a couple of Rubi and Lana Knitting group meet-ups. Everyone has been absolutely delightful. But that didn’t stop me from being nervous and so I wrote “Ellen’s visit”

This is an entirely fictional account.

Inspirations

I couldn’t go past Kevin Rudd’s apology speech to the indigenous people of Australia in the inspiration stakes.

Here’s a link to some information about it.

I also mentioned that Autumn has come to Australia, NSW. It’s good and inspiring knitting weather.

Music

In this episode we heard:

“Extremely Old With You” by Paul and Storm

“The Swimming Song” by Blue Dew

All music from today’s podcast was from the Podsafe Music Network

There have been quite a few new podcasts popping up, such as

Gwendolen’s Gifts

Knitting at night and

Also check out Knitterati - a cool videocast.

And if you’re in Orange, NSW - you could pop by a shop called Caboodle, on Ansen St.

THE ANNECODOTE

In this podcast I tell a story about my ineffectual knitted Christams gift - that I will have fond memories of even though the recipient may never remember it and the gift may already be sitting in a bin somewhere.

THE THRIFTY CRAFTER

In this episode I mention a phenonomen that I’ve noticed since I’ve begun to tell people about my crafty ways - people will give you supplies. I call it “scouting”, as in, others will scout out things for you…anyone know of a cheap spinning wheel?????

An in my own “scouting” I have found that Eco Yarns are having a sale on soysilk and bamboo fibre - it’s discounted by %75 and there’s only a small amount left - good luck.

VISITS TO THE YARN STORE

This weeks character was inspired by my own visit to Dubbo in NSW, over the Christmas period. I have visited the country before, of course, but this time I’d primed my husband to stop at any open and interesting yarn stores…problem was… I couldn’t find any???????

INSPIRATIONS

Inspiration is such a personal thing and yet I try to define it once again.

I have found some inspiration in a park

on a blog: Her Eyes Shone like Emeralds Of The Deepest Hue - (Don’t you just love the title?)

and in the Australian magazine Textile

THANKS

Thank you to everyone who has come back to listen to the podcast - I know I’ve only been getting one out every month or so. My hat goes off to all those other podcasters who manage to write an essay a week! I can’t seem to do it. But I do thank everyone who’s stuck it out with me.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

There are a couple of new podcast on the airwaves. Please check out Sweaters For Dragons and A Very Palpable Knit

THE ANECDOTE - A GIFT

In this episode we explore buying a gift for my mother’s birthday.

Will it be a store bought or handmade gift?

Will a case of shopping centre weirdness interfere?

THE THIFTY KNITTER

After some positve experiences in a variety of thrift stores I’m putting out a $1 challenge - just for fun, ’cause I’m not really that competitive.

What have you found for $1? Leave the results of your challenge in the comments section!

VISITS TO THE YARN STORE

Today we listen to the results of Poppy’s visit to the yarn store.

Have you ever tried to indoctrinate someone into the ways of yarn…or were you the indoctrinated party?

I think there’s been a little bit of Poppy in me at times.

INSPIRATIONS

OK…I may be yearning for better days but today I found a protest to be most inspiring. People care. It’s good to know this, whether or not we all share the same views.

The APEC conference is here and there are protests organised for Friday, which has been declared a public holiday for those working in the city…the question remains…once a public holiday has been introduced , can it be withdrawn the following year. Will the Australian public stand for this?

There are lots of links for the Apec Protests - try this one or this one or this one. There are lots more as well as links to other protests all over the world. I’m hopeful that these will be peaceful protests.

MUSIC

We listened to “Shopping High” by Jamelopoeia

and “Secrets” by Jenny Dalton

All music from this episode can be found a the podsafe music network

THANKS AND APOLOGIES

Firstly, thanks to those listeners who have left comments. I know I write this every week but I am sincere in my thanks. Now I know what other podcasters mean when they say it’s the comments that keep them going.

A big thank you to the SES (State Emergency Service) for helping get the tree off our roof ….in amongst the countless other tasks they had to complete.

Apologies for leaving it so long between episodes. Life got a little interesting with gale force winds, power blackouts and a tree on our house…and then I stuffed it all up and deleted my first recording of this episode.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

I’ve decided to put a new segment in for announcements as I’ve had some to make over the last two episodes.

If you are in need to new podcasts try switching your country on the itunes istore page. Not all the knitting podcasts are listed on each country and I found quite a few more by pretending that I was in the UK or Ireland.

I found The Continental on Ireland’s page and My Electic Mess and Purl Diving on the US page.

Marly from The Yarn Thing podcast is running a Summer KAL-CAL. There’s still time to join up so check out the link for more details.

THE ANNECDOTE

I’m still continuing with the TAST challenge.

In the last few weeks I worked on cross stitch and designed “The Blue Lady”.

Listen to the episode to find out more.

As promised here is the picture. Is she deserving of a bullet?

THE THRIFTY CRAFTER

In this episode we hear about my first adventures in spinning, made a lot easier by some beautiful products.

Naturally, as a thrifty crafter I’m not quite up to purchasing a spinning wheel - so I bought a beautiful Spindle from The Spindlemaker.

I also purchsed some very beautiful and reasonable merino tops from Virginia Farm Woolworks.

VISITS TO THE YARN STORE

In this episode we hear about Vivian’s latest visit to the yarn store..and what did Vivian do next?

INSPIRATION

Naturally at this time the SES volunteers are incredibly inspirational.

Also inspirational was a chance meeting with a stranger who talked to me about art and encouraged my work.

We bumped into eachother at the cafe in Sappho Books in Glebe - they do a really good Chai.

MUSIC

All songs can be found on the podsafe music network.

In this episode I played She Dreams in Blue by Josh Woodward

and

How the wind must feel by Amy Kuney

New Podcast

There is another new podcast out called Knit Science. I hope you enjoyed the promo for this and will give her a listen.

The Annecdote

Today I mentioned my lovely friend’s reaction to some of my “experimental pieces”. The ones I was considering selling at the markets.

She had some interesting suggestions… and I will take some of them on board.

Needless to say: I’m still experimenting

The Thrifty Crafter

In this episode I mentioned one of my favourite cheap book stores, Basement Books at Central Station, Sydney.

I mentioned a few of the books I have purchased there including:

Cosy Crochet by Melissa Leapman and

Needlepoint by Kate Tully (I couldn’t find a site with pictures for this one)

Currently Basement books has Family Album by Kaffe Fasset and Zoe Hunt in stock and selling for $5.95. I think I saw about 15 copies on the table.

I mentioned that I’d be most happy for listeners to leave details of their own favourite thrifty craft book store …so…please do leave a comment and info for everyone else. But please note that obviously I can’t check them all out and so do not take responsibility for any dodgy directions.

Visits to the Yarn Store

In this episode we heard about Dianne’s day at the Yarn Store.

Poor Dianne needs a hand in learning to knit.

I learned to knit from the book Knitting Workshop by Debbie Bliss. I will love this book forever as it was my first knitting book. But I paid about $50 for this book! I hadn’t discovered Basement books yet.

Inspirations

In this episode I was able to read a poem called “Ode to a Knitted Dishcloth” by Leigh from The Chemgrrl Chronicles

Music

We listened to “Big Shot” by the Big George Jackson Blues Band and

“People Make Mistakes” by Aaron Short.

All music can be found on the podsafe music network

Thanks

I have a few words of thanks to those who have been supportive and encouraging at the begining of this venture.

Firstly to Brenda Dane from Cast On - for her warm and encouraging plug

Also to David Reidy from Sticks and Strings -for his plug

and to Theresa from Knitting Time Together and to Stitch Stud from Stitch Stud and his Bride for their welcome.

Thanks also to all listeners who have left comments - I am excited to receive them and pleased to know that I’m not some crazy lady talking to herself and the computer.

The Annecdote

This week we heard the tale of my attempts to teach my Sister to knit. Not very successful attempts, I’m afraid. Though she did learn a bit of embroidery by the end.

In our hunt for yarn we visited Tapestry Craft.

In our search for a cosy but totally impractical cafe in which to teach someone to knit, we visited The Tea Centre cafe.

I can’t find the copy of the magazine that had the article about teaching others to knit in it. But I will link it when and if I find it. In the meantime you could check out issue 1 of Yarn Magazine, for some ideas on teaching kids to knit.

The Thrify Crafter

The tip this week was to try sourcing upholstery shops for sample books of discontinued fabric.

I’ve managed to score some sample books for free. The fabric can then be used for bag linings or embroidery bases.

Visits to the Yarn Store

In this episode we met another character from the yarn store, Rhonda.

The person Rhonda was speaking to (who was that, exactly? Partner, husband, father…?) was going to play a game of Paintball.

Rhonda was going to start knitting some socks - I wonder what pattern she was going to practice on?

Inspirations

This week I found inspiration quite hard to come by until I looked up at the clouds.

I remembered reading Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach, in my aspirational hippy days.

I also remembered trying to make clouds disapear with my mind. (Try Illusions - also by Richard Bach)

Music

All music in this show is available from the podsafe music network

We listened to “High Horses” by The Wyrd Sisters

We also listened to “My Smorgasboard of Love” from Don’t Hug Me

Thanks to all those listeners who have returned for a second show. Apologies that the show notes were a little late - I’ve been having computer issues. I’ve now put a link at the top of this post so that the show can be downloaded directly from the gcast site without the need for itunes or a podcatcher. You just have to scroll down the page until you get to the episodes which have a play button and a download button next to them.

Thanks

Thanks to Claudia and Andrea for leaving the first precious comments on this site.
Thanks as well to the podcasters below for their comments and welcome - which really says to me “There’s room for everyone to play in the sandbox”

Manda from Knitting Psychos

Shannon from SSK

Marly from Yarn Thing.

The Anecdote

This covered my Charity Knitting experience where my pride bubble burst.

Please don’t let that dissuade you from taking part in Wrap With Love. (I didn’t mention this name on the podcast because I’m not 100% sure if this was the one I went to - but it was similar)

I’m happy if others learn from my mistakes and turn up with their own pre-knitted squares to cover for the fact that they are a very slow knitter.

The Thrifty Knitter

I talked about two sets of needles. The first was Sullivans Bamboo Straight needles for 99c at Lincraft. Please note that I consider these needles to be cheap and cheerful.

The second pair I talked about were Casein needles made by Swallow. Please note that I consider these needles to be gorgeous.

Visits to the Yarn Store

We met the character of Sally, who’s is all geared up to knit Annie Modesitt’s Twisted Float Shrug from Vogue Knitting - Fall 2005. It’s pictured on the cover.

Inspirations

I mentioned that The Museum of Contempory Art has purchased some new works, one of which is “Oracle Fox” by Louise Weaver. If any of my Australian listeners take a look let me know what you think.

I also mentioned my recent discoverey of ATC’s

Music

The music played in this podcast was provided by the Podsafe Music Network.

“Erf ” by Man Bites God and

“Life On A Beach” by Albert Forsell
